Session Description:
The worldwide transition to the International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision (ICD-10) was completed in 1994. Due to the enormous number of modifications that needed to occur in order for the classification to be useful in the American healthcare system, the United States remains the last country to implement ICD-10.

In the United States, ICD-10 is now referred to as the International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) for the diagnoses and International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, Procedure Classification System (ICD-10-PCS) for the procedures. This presentation will concentrate on the modifications that comprise the procedure codes, namely ICD-10-PCS.

Session Objectives:
After this presentation the learner will be able to:

1. Discuss the development of ICD-10-PCS;
2. Identify the major modifications;
3. Recognize the structure and format of ICD-10-PCS codes; and
4. Become familiar with the coding conventions for ICD-10-PCS.

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education through the joint sponsorship of the Georgia Health Sciences University Medical College of Georgia and the Georgia Statewide Area Health Education Centers. The Medical College of Georgia is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The Georgia Health Sciences University Medical College of Georgia designates this educational activity for a maximum of 1.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

About Lori H. Prince
Ms. Lori H. Prince has taught at the Georgia Health Sciences University (formerly the Medical College of Georgia) in the Department of Health Informatics since 1996. Her areas of expertise include: Medical Terminology, Pathophysiology, Healthcare Quality and Performance Improvement, Medical Classification Systems and Coding, Medical Billing and Principles of Reimbursement. In January 2011, she became Interim Chair of the Department of Health Informatics. Over the years, she has had responsibility for the clinical track courses in the undergraduate Health Information Administration program, the Post-Baccalaureate Certificate program and the Masters of Public Health in Informatics program. Her credentials include Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) and a Certified Coding Specialist (CCS).
